Tourism sector recognized as industry but lacks benefits: Tourism Minister
Minister Sinha highlighted that the current laws do not provide tourism businesses with the benefits outlined under the Industrial Enterprises Act.
KATHMANDU: Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Anil Kumar Sinha has stated that although the tourism sector has been recognized as an industry, it has not been granted the industry-level facilities it deserves.
Speaking at a Legislative Management Committee meeting on Monday, Minister Sinha highlighted that the current laws do not provide tourism businesses with the benefits outlined under the Industrial Enterprises Act.
He emphasized the need to simplify regulations for the sector.
Sinha noted that over 80% of hotel occupancy is driven by domestic tourists, and easing facilities for domestic tourism could further boost the industry.
Tourism entrepreneurs have also requested tax exemptions on expenses incurred in domestic tourism, he added.
He said, “Currently, more than 80% of hotels are fully booked by domestic tourists. If we make domestic tourism slightly more convenient—for example, by offering tax exemptions on domestic tourism expenses under corporate social responsibility—it would greatly support the sector. While we have recognized tourism as an industry, it has not yet received the benefits it deserves under the Industrial Enterprises Act. Our current laws do not provide that.”
The minister also informed that the ministry is preparing an integrated bill to address all issues faced by the tourism sector.
