KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has expressed its support for the government’s decision to introduce a two-day weekly holiday (Saturday and Sunday) in educational institutions and has called for effective implementation across all concerned bodies.

The Cabinet had earlier decided to implement the two-day holiday system for all government offices and schools starting April 6, following difficulties in petroleum supply.

Under the revised arrangement, office hours have been fixed from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on working days.

In a joint press statement issued on Thursday, Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi and General Secretary Tula Bahadur Thapa backed the new schedule and urged authorities to adjust academic calendars and teaching routines accordingly to ensure smooth continuity of education.

The Federation also reiterated its long-standing demand for the swift enactment of the School Education Act, ensuring resolution of issues related to permanent, temporary, relief, contract, former higher secondary, teaching-learning grant, early childhood development, and special education teachers as well as school staff.

Expressing concern, the Federation highlighted reports of teacher post reductions and forced removals in districts such as Solukhumbu and Siraha, along with irregular transfers carried out under various pretexts, calling for fair and stable management of education sector human resources.
