KATHMANDU: Nepal is celebrating Tamu Lhosar today with great enthusiasm across the country. The Gurung community observes this festival to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.
In the Gurung language, “Lho” means year and “Sar” means change, symbolizing the transition from one year to the next.
The festival particularly falls on the night of Poush 15, the longest night of the year, marking the victory of light over darkness as days gradually become longer.
Tamu Lhosar is deeply connected to the sun and geographical location. In districts with significant Gurung populations, such as Lamjung, Gorkha, Kaski, Manang, and Syangja, the warmth of the sun is felt earlier, which is why the festival is traditionally celebrated in Poush.
The federal government has declared today a public holiday in honor of the festival.
In the capital, the Gurung community is celebrating the occasion with a vibrant cultural rally, starting from Basantapur and proceeding through Ratnapark, Bhadrakali, and Sahidgate, culminating at Tundikhel, showcasing the rich heritage and traditions of the Gurung people.
