Switzerland ends local infrastructure support in Nepal
The move comes as Nepal is now considered technically capable of independently managing such infrastructure projects.
KATHMANDU: The government of Switzerland is set to officially phase out its long-standing support in local infrastructure development in Nepal, marking the end of decades of technical and financial assistance in building roads and bridges at the local level.
Through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Switzerland has been actively involved in designing and supporting the construction of rural roads and bridges across Nepal.
The move comes as Nepal is now considered technically capable of independently managing such infrastructure projects.
According to Rabi Singh, Chair of the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal, Switzerland’s contribution to Nepal’s local infrastructure development has been significant. “They supported us not only with financial resources but also with technical expertise—especially in designing and implementing road and bridge projects in remote areas,” he said.
To mark the conclusion of this cooperation, a two-day conference has been organized, showcasing the achievements of SDC’s support in Nepal.
Visual exhibits of completed projects are also being displayed.
Singh mentioned that this transition reflects Nepal’s growing capability. “The Swiss government is handing over this responsibility after enabling Nepal to manage such infrastructure independently,” he added.
The SDC’s infrastructure support program is set to be officially concluded by Wednesday.
