KATHMANDU: Rekha Sharma, the Nepal Communist Party leader who defeated UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel in the parliamentary elections three years ago, has announced she will not contest this year’s election.

In the previous contest, representing the then CPN (Maoist Centre), Sharma won by a narrow margin of 196 votes, securing 26,877 votes against Pokharel’s 26,681.

This time, Pokharel is set to contest again from Dang-2.

The newly formed Nepal Communist Party, an alliance including the Maoists, is expected to field Nirmal Acharya as its candidate.

Sharma, a two-time proportional representation lawmaker and one-time directly elected MP, confirmed her decision to stay out of the race.

Meanwhile, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) plans to field Vice-Chair Bipin Kumar Acharya as its candidate in the constituency.
