Rare Black Panther spotted in Ilam

KATHMANDU: A rare black panther has been spotted for the first time in Bagbire, Suryodaya Municipality–2 of Ilam district.
The Panther was discovered on Monday morning inside the goat shed of local resident Tanka Kafle.
According to Raju Ghimire, Chairperson of the Laligurans Community Development Committee, the predator killed three goats — two mothers and a kid — inside the shed.
“We found the panther resting inside after it had eaten. Since its color was completely black, we suspected it to be a rare species and immediately informed the police and forest officials,” Ghimire said.
Locals report that in the past month alone, the leopard has killed at least seven goats in the area.
Victims include livestock belonging to Ghimire himself, Sher Bahadur Gurung of Maijogmai–2, Harkasingh Rai of Mulkharka, and Gopal Khadka of Bijje.
The frequent livestock attacks have created fear among villagers. “People are now afraid to collect firewood, send children to school, or walk alone,” Ghimire added.
Birendra Sah, Chief of the Ilam Division Forest Office, confirmed that a technical rescue team from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve was immediately deployed to capture the animal.
“This is the first recorded sighting of a black panther in Koshi Province. Previously, such a panther was only recorded in Kavre. After the rescue, further research will be conducted,” Sah stated.
Experts clarify that the black panther is not a separate species but an ordinary leopard with high levels of melanin — a natural pigment responsible for the color of skin, hair, and eyes — which makes its coat appear entirely black.
The discovery of the black panther in Ilam has been described as rare and significant for Nepal’s wildlife diversity.
