KATHMANDU: Celebrations over Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) dramatic Champions League victory over Arsenal descended into widespread unrest across France, with authorities confirming more than 400 arrests following overnight clashes, fires, and public disorder.

PSG secured the title after defeating Arsenal in a penalty shootout, but the post-match celebrations quickly escalated into chaos in several parts of the country, particularly in Paris.

Streets turn chaotic amid fireworks and arson

Police reported that some fans set fires, launched fireworks, and disrupted transport services, including buses and trains.

Authorities said public infrastructure and nearby businesses were also damaged during the unrest.

Thousands of security personnel were deployed across the capital as tensions rose. Riot police used tear gas to disperse crowds in multiple hotspots, while several officers were injured during clashes.

Hundreds detained across the country

France’s Interior Ministry said 416 people were arrested by Sunday morning, including around 280 in Paris alone. Officials confirmed that at least seven police officers were injured during the disturbances.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the violence as “completely unacceptable,” stressing that emergency measures were required to restore order.

Tensions before kickoff

Reports also indicated earlier confrontations before the match, when fans gathering at public screening areas near the Eiffel Tower and Parc des Princes stadium clashed with police.

Several vehicles, small businesses, and a bus shelter were damaged during the unrest.

Victory parade planned amid security concerns

Despite the violence, PSG players are scheduled to take part in a victory parade in Paris on Sunday afternoon, including a public appearance at Champs-de-Mars and a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.

Authorities say security will be significantly reinforced during the celebrations following the overnight unrest.

Background concerns

This is not the first time PSG-related celebrations have turned deadly or violent.

Last year, similar post-match unrest following a European triumph led to fatalities, including a 17-year-old, raising ongoing concerns about crowd control during major football celebrations.
