Portugal to begin World Cup glory hunt against DR Congo
Despite being one of Europe’s football powerhouses, Portugal national football team have never lifted the World Cup trophy.
KATHMANDU: Portugal opening their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on Wednesday night with a highly anticipated Group K clash against the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the Houston Stadium, as their long-awaited pursuit of global glory officially begins.
Despite being one of Europe’s football powerhouses, Portugal national football team have never lifted the World Cup trophy.
Their best-ever finish came in 1966 when they secured third place in England, while recent decades have brought mixed fortunes on the biggest stage.
Under head coach Roberto Martínez, Portugal arrive in the United States regarded as one of the leading contenders alongside France and Spain, thanks to a deep and balanced squad across all departments.
Veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo is set to captain the side in what could be his final World Cup appearance, adding further narrative weight to Portugal’s campaign. The 41-year-old will be chasing yet another milestone as he targets his 143rd international goal.
Portugal’s recent form has strengthened belief in their title credentials. They won all three of their pre-tournament friendlies against the United States, Chile, and Nigeria, while also registering a record 9–1 win over Armenia during qualification.
However, inconsistency still lingers in memory, including a loss to the Republic of Ireland earlier in the campaign—raising questions about whether they can maintain elite performance under knockout pressure.
Their opponents, DR Congo national football team, enter the match as underdogs but with growing confidence after a strong qualifying run and a historic return to the World Cup after 52 years.
Nicknamed the “Leopards,” DR Congo have shown resilience in recent months, including a draw against Denmark and a narrow defeat to Chile. They also reached the Round of 16 in the Africa Cup of Nations, signaling steady progress on the international stage.
Midfield leadership is expected from Noa Sadiki, while forward options include Yoane Wissa and Cedric Bakambu, both capable of threatening Portugal’s defense on counterattacks.
For Portugal, the squad boasts major depth with players such as Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes providing balance across defense and midfield.
With Group K also featuring Uzbekistan and Colombia, Portugal are widely expected to top the group, but tougher tests lie ahead that could shape their knockout path.
Kick-off in Houston is set for 10:45 PM Nepal time, marking the start of a campaign that Portugal hope will finally end their World Cup drought and cement a golden generation’s legacy.
