Police statement on viral Babarmahal crash video
Officers said the driver was immediately taken out of the vehicle for inspection, at which point he was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu traffic police have issued a clarification after a video circulated on social media showed a car crashing into a roadside barrier while officers attempted to stop it in the Babarmahal area.
Police said the incident followed a reported hit-and-run earlier that day. On the first day of the Nepali New Year, 2083 Baisakh 1 (April 14), officers received a verbal complaint that a private car travelling from Baneshwor towards Maitighar Mandala had struck a motorcycle and fled the scene.
Traffic police stationed in Babarmahal then tried to intercept the vehicle. However, instead of stopping, the driver allegedly accelerated in an uncontrolled manner, leading the car to crash into a roadside barrier.
Officers said the driver was immediately taken out of the vehicle for inspection, at which point he was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Police confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against the driver for drink-driving and fleeing the scene of an accident, in line with the Motor Vehicle and Transport Management Act.
