PM Karki extends greetings on Sonam Lhosar
Celebrated on the first day of the bright fortnight of Magh, Sonam Lhosar marks the New Year for the Tamang community.
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has extended her heartfelt greetings on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar–2862, the Tibetan New Year marking the Year of the Horse.
In her message, she said, “I convey my warmest wishes to all on the auspicious occasion of Sonam Lhosar–2862, Ta Lho (Year of the Horse), a national cultural festival of the Tamang and other Himalayan and hill indigenous communities.”
Celebrated on the first day of the bright fortnight of Magh, Sonam Lhosar marks the New Year for the Tamang community.
The festival involves clan and nature worship, remembrance of Buddha’s teachings, and joyful gatherings with family and friends.
Along with the Tamang community, indigenous groups including the Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nyeshang, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha celebrate the festival with enthusiasm.
Traditional dances, songs, musical performances, and customary delicacies showcased during Sonam Lhosar are considered a vital part of Nepal’s cultural heritage.
