KATHMANDU: Telugu film Peddi has landed in controversy just two days after its release, despite reportedly earning over INR 150 crore globally and more than INR 114 crore in India.

The dispute centers on actress Janhvi Kapoor’s character “Achiyamma,” which has sparked criticism on social media.

Viewers have objected to the portrayal, claiming the character was depicted in an exaggerated and unrealistic manner that appeared designed more for visual appeal than narrative necessity.

Following the backlash, director Buchi Babu Sana publicly issued an apology, clarifying that there was never any intention to misrepresent or disrespect women through the film.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote that cinema should entertain, inspire, and create an emotional connection with audiences, and never make anyone uncomfortable or feel insulted.

He acknowledged the audience’s concerns and said the feedback was taken very seriously.

He further confirmed that the team has decided to modify the disputed scenes after reviewing audience reactions.

Sana added that filmmakers have a responsibility to evolve with changing sensitivities and respect evolving audience perspectives.

Peddi is a sports drama that follows the journey of a character striving to build identity and success through sports.

The film, written and directed by Buchi Babu Sana, features Ram Charan, Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Divyendu, and Jagapathi Babu in key roles.
