Parliamentary Committee urges faster completion of gallery meeting reconstruction
Committee Chairperson Mayaprasad Sharma acknowledged that while progress is evident, completing the project on schedule remains uncertain.
KATHMANDU: A parliamentary committee has reported that the reconstruction work of the gallery meeting hall is progressing, though there are concerns about timely completion.
After a meeting of the Public Policy and Sponsored Legislation Committee at Singha Durbar on Sunday, members inspected the old parliament building and directed for the reconstruction work to be finished quickly.
Committee Chairperson Mayaprasad Sharma acknowledged that while progress is evident, completing the project on schedule remains uncertain.
He emphasized that the old parliament building is an archaeological heritage site that must be preserved. “The work is progressing; damaged materials have been removed. This is a matter of protecting history and archaeology. It is good that construction is underway, but the delay is unfortunate. It must be completed soon,” he said.
The committee also discussed with the Department of Archaeology about safeguarding the archaeological heritage of the gallery meeting hall, issues regarding the gymnasium constructed near Mahalaxmisthan Temple, and concerns over land ownership transfers in the Swayambhu area.
Additionally, discussions were held with the Urban Development and Building Construction Department regarding the status of the gallery meeting reconstruction and the ongoing construction of the new parliament building.
