KATHMANDU: The highly anticipated second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) officially began today, inaugurated by Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
The opening match took place at the TU Cricket Ground, which is under high security, according to Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) spokesperson Chhumpi Lama.
Around 1,900 personnel from the Nepal Police, 250 from the Armed Police, and approximately 400 private security and volunteers have been deployed, ensuring a safe and orderly environment for fans.
For the first time, spectators will enjoy matches from the parquette seating area, with separate zones and entry gates.
Online ticket buyers were provided with dedicated counters, facilitating smooth entry.
Today also marks the debut of floodlit cricket at the TU Cricket Ground, a historic moment for Nepalese cricket.
The opening match features defending champions Janakpur Bolts against Kathmandu Gurkhas.
Prior to the game, a helicopter showered flowers over the stadium in a spectacular ceremony.
Kathmandu Gurkhas captain Karan KC won the toss and opted to bowl first, sending Janakpur Bolts to bat.
Janakpur is led by Anil Shah, while Kathmandu is under Karan KC’s leadership.
Last season, Kathmandu missed out on the playoffs based on net run rate.
This season, eight franchise teams will compete in a total of 32 matches over 27 days, culminating in the final on Mangsir 27 (Dec 13).
Prize money for the season remains substantial: the champion will receive Rs 1.1 crore, the runner-up Rs 51 lakh, and the third-placed team Rs 15 lakh.
With floodlights illuminating the field for the first time, today marks a landmark moment in Nepalese cricket history.
