NMC unveils research grant to promote medical innovation

KATHMANDU: Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar has announced a dedicated research grant program aimed at promoting health and medical education research.
The initiative seeks to institutionalize a culture of research and enhance the capabilities of researchers, the college stated.
The new research unit was jointly inaugurated by the college’s founders, Dr. Sunil Kumar Sharma and his wife, Indira Sharma Baral.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Gehanath Baral, Head of the Research Unit, emphasized the need for continuous research to strengthen Nobel Medical College’s achievements in healthcare.
He expressed confidence that the research unit and the grant program would make a meaningful contribution to the field of medicine and extended gratitude to the Sharma family for their support.
International Director Dr. Niranjan Kumar highlighted the rapid global competition in health research and stressed the importance of advancing Nepal’s research efforts effectively.
CEO Prof. Dr. Ramhari Ghimire underscored the need for research to be evidence-based and practical, emphasizing that it should directly benefit healthcare services and public health.
Principal Prof. Dr. Rajesh Nepal announced an annual research grant of Rs 1 million.
Under this program, six research projects within Nepal—three led by faculty, physicians, medical staff, or students, and three by external teams—will receive funding.
Additionally, two international research projects will be supported. Interested applicants must comply with the procedures set by Nobel’s Research Unit.
The program concluded with Prof. Dr. Bishwanath Adhikari extending best wishes for the success of the initiative.
According to sources, Nobel Medical College is the first private medical institution in Nepal to establish a structured research grant program of this scale.
Dr. Sunil Sharma has long been committed to community health, running outreach health camps, providing free treatment to underprivileged patients, and offering scholarships to financially disadvantaged yet talented students.
He continues to enhance specialized healthcare services at Nobel Medical College and Kathmandu Medical College, striving to make quality healthcare more accessible and inclusive.
