KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene has stepped up precautionary measures to prevent the possible entry and spread of the Ebola virus following outbreaks reported in African countries.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Dr. Samir Kumar Adhikari, authorities have adopted a high-alert approach despite Nepal being geographically distant from the affected regions.

“Although the outbreak is occurring far from Nepal, we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the virus does not enter the country,” Dr. Adhikari said.

The ministry has intensified surveillance and health screening at Tribhuvan International Airport and major border checkpoints.

Health workers have been deployed at potential entry points to identify and assess suspected cases.

Dr. Adhikari said discussions have also been held on patient management, infection prevention, and healthcare worker orientation programs to strengthen preparedness. Coordination is underway regarding safety measures and protocols for Nepali citizens who may travel to or return from Ebola-affected areas.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, prompting countries worldwide to strengthen monitoring and response mechanisms.

Officials confirmed that Nepal has not recorded any confirmed Ebola cases so far.

Common Symptoms of Ebola

Health authorities have urged the public to remain informed about the symptoms of Ebola, which include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe weakness and fatigue
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headaches, muscle pain, and sore throat
  • Skin rashes
  • Impaired liver and kidney function
  • Internal or external bleeding in severe cases

The ministry has assured the public that preparedness and surveillance efforts are being continuously strengthened to minimize any potential risk of Ebola transmission in Nepal.
