KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal has shut down more than 7,000 online gambling applications and websites in a major crackdown on illegal betting.
The move, implemented by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) in coordination with internet service providers, is part of the government’s administrative reform measures.
According to NTA Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane, the authority has identified and ordered the closure of apps and websites operating illegally in the betting sector.
“Over 7,000 URLs and apps have been blocked so far. In the past week alone, we have received more than 50 complaints about online gambling through phone, email, and text messages. All complaints are being addressed as part of this enforcement,” he said.
The action follows a government decision approved on Chaitra 13, 2082 (March 26, 2026), under the administrative reform agenda.
Point 42 of the approved 100-point plan mandates the shutdown of gambling-related apps and websites within 24 hours.
Under this directive, the NTA coordinated with service providers to immediately block all identified electronic platforms involved in gambling.
Nepal’s Muluki Criminal Code, 2074 (Section 125, Subsection 4) prohibits any individual from participating in or facilitating gambling.
Violations may result in confiscation of the amount used for betting, imprisonment of up to one year, and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.
Similarly, the Advertising (Regulation) Act, 2066, forbids advertisements promoting gambling or unauthorized betting activities. Violators face similar penalties of up to one year in prison and a Rs 10,000 fine.
The government has urged citizens not to use or operate gambling apps and websites and warned that strict action will be taken against those found doing so.
Authorities have also requested the public to report any suspicious apps or websites.
