Nepal Communist Party to field all new faces for proportional representation seats
Those previously elected through either direct or proportional elections will not be recommended this time.
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Communist Party has introduced strict and unprecedented criteria for selecting candidates under the proportional representation system.
According to the party, leaders who have previously served as members of parliament or held ministerial positions will not be included in this election’s proportional representation closed list.
In a discussion among top leaders on the final day to submit the list to the Election Commission, the party agreed to give opportunities exclusively to new faces, effectively giving a break to seasoned politicians.
Those previously elected through either direct or proportional elections will not be recommended this time.
Top leaders, including party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and co-chair Madhav Kumar Nepal, are finalizing the list based on this new policy.
A party leader said that this approach of not repeating old faces has made the selection process smoother.
Nepal Communist Party claims to be the only party planning to send entirely new candidates through the proportional representation system.
In the 2079 BS elections, proportional representation seats were won by CPN-UML (34), Nepali Congress (32), CPN-Maoist Centre (14), Rastriya Swatantra Party (8), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (7).
