KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has emphasized the need to unite the party to safeguard the constitution, democracy, and national interests, amid growing internal debates over leadership.

Speaking to journalists after the party’s central committee meeting on Tuesday, Mahat expressed concern over party leaders diverting focus from key issues by questioning the leadership, even though NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba has already announced he will step down after the upcoming general convention.

“Debates over leadership at a time when democracy, the constitution, and the party itself are under attack only weaken our unity,” he said. Mahat added that since Deuba has already handed over interim responsibilities and confirmed he will not continue as leader after the convention, discussions on leadership changes should end.

He further said, “The country is facing major challenges. Attacks on our party and the constitution are attempts to weaken the foundations of national integrity. While discussions about new leadership have arisen, they have distracted from critical issues and affected party unity. Holding the convention as soon as possible is important, but right now, unity is the top priority. Despite Deuba’s clear stance, some responsible party leaders continue to raise questions that cast doubt on the party itself.”

The meeting also condemned violent attacks on party leaders during the Gen Z protests and highlighted serious issues within the party’s affiliated organizations, calling for their revitalization.
