KATHMANDU: A delegation led by Surendra Kumar Upreti, Chair of the Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), held a meeting today with the newly appointed Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Suraj Prasad Kafle, to discuss key issues related to traffic management in the Kathmandu Valley.

During the meeting, both sides engaged in an in-depth discussion on existing challenges in managing urban traffic and explored areas for constructive and long-term collaboration between the traffic police and NADA.

Chief Kafle emphasized the need for creative and sustainable cooperation between the two institutions to improve overall traffic systems in the capital.

He also raised concerns over the increasing use of large motorcycles, typically designed for hilly terrain, within Kathmandu’s urban roads, noting that scooters tend to have a comparatively lower accident rate. He stressed the importance of evidence-based traffic planning and safety awareness.

Kafle further suggested that NADA should play an active role in conducting road safety awareness programs across the Kathmandu Valley. He also proposed the introduction of AI-powered traffic light systems to modernize traffic regulation and improve efficiency.

One of the key proposals discussed was the idea of providing a short, approximately one-hour mandatory orientation session for every new vehicle buyer, first-time drivers, and service center users under the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office. According to him, such a measure could significantly improve traffic discipline and awareness.

On behalf of NADA, President Upreti highlighted the association’s past collaboration with the traffic police and reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation.

He also informed that NADA is preparing to celebrate its 50th Annual General Meeting as a golden jubilee week-long event from Asar 13 to 19, 2083 BS (late June–early July 2026), featuring various programs in the capital, for which he sought the active support of the traffic police.

Upreti further shared that NADA plans to launch a traffic awareness campaign using stickers as part of its public outreach initiatives.

NADA General Secretary Milan Babu Malla reiterated the organization’s long-standing collaboration with the traffic police and expressed readiness for continued partnership.

Vice-Chair Bikram Singhaniya, Secretary Meghraj Paudel, and Treasurer Pankaj Agrawal also shared their views during the discussion, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts to improve urban traffic management in Kathmandu.
