More talks needed with opposition to end parliamentary deadlock: RSP
Kabindra Burlakoti said the meeting failed to reach a consensus, prompting the need for additional dialogue aimed at resuming the obstructed House proceedings.
KATHMANDU: The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has said further discussions will be held with opposition parties to resolve the ongoing parliamentary deadlock.
Speaking after an all-party meeting convened by RSP President Rabi Lamichhane on Monday, party General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti said the meeting failed to reach a consensus, prompting the need for additional dialogue aimed at resuming the obstructed House proceedings.
According to Burlakoti, the RSP argued that the controversy surrounding Prime Minister Balen Shah’s remarks in Parliament falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and therefore could be addressed by Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal.
However, opposition parties maintained that only the prime minister should provide an explanation, leading both sides to agree that further consultations are necessary.
Burlakoti said Lamichhane had stressed during the meeting that since the issue pertains to a specific policy matter, it would be appropriate for the foreign minister to respond on behalf of the government.
He also emphasized that matters related to foreign affairs should be handled and addressed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an appropriate and institutional manner.
The all-party meeting concluded with an understanding that continued dialogue will be required before a breakthrough can be reached on ending the parliamentary impasse and restoring normal legislative business.
