Opposition MPs demand PM clarify border remarks in House session

KATHMANDU: Opposition lawmakers in House of Representatives on Monday objected to Prime Minister Balen Shah’s recent remarks on border issues, demanding that the statement be removed from the official parliamentary record.
The protest unfolded during a meeting of the House after opposition members stood from their seats to voice their dissent.
Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal subsequently allowed them time to present their concerns.
Lawmakers argued that the Prime Minister’s statement, made during an address on June 2, was inconsistent with Nepal’s established national position on territorial matters and should therefore be expunged from the parliamentary record.
The House meeting began nearly two hours behind schedule amid growing political tensions over the issue.
Speaking in the session, lawmaker Padma Kumari Aryal called for the immediate removal of the Prime Minister’s border-related remarks from the official record.
She recalled that Nepal had achieved national consensus in 2020 on incorporating Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani into the country’s official map.
Other opposition lawmakers, including members of the Nepali Congress and leaders Santosh Subba, Harkaraj Sampang Rai, Barshaman Pun and Gyanendra Bahadur Shahi, also raised concerns over separate allegations involving tax-rate alterations and reported irregularities in vehicle imports from China linked to customs procedures.
The lawmakers urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations reported by the media and take action against those found responsible.
