KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Mahabir Pun has urged teachers’ unions, professors’ associations, and employee bodies within the education sector to maintain a non-political character.

Issuing a statement today, Minister Pun said such organizations should function as professional trade unions with the primary purpose of collective bargaining for their rights and welfare.

He clarified that while he fully supports legitimate professional advocacy, he will not recognize teacher and professor groups aligned with or operating as wings of political parties.

According to the statement, various suggestions and complaints received by the ministry indicate that involvement of teachers and professors in partisan political activities has adversely affected academic quality and professional discipline.

“Those found engaging in political activities contrary to professional conduct will face action in accordance with the law,” the statement warned.
