KATHMANDU: The government has increased the customs duty-free allowance for travelers crossing the country’s land border checkpoints, raising the limit from Rs 100 to Rs 500 for personal-use items carried into or out of the country.

According to a new notification published in the government gazette, travelers entering or leaving Nepal via land routes may carry personal belongings worth up to Rs 500 without paying customs duties.

Customs office chiefs will have the authority to waive duties on such items based on their intended personal use and necessity.

The revision comes after widespread criticism of the previous rule, under which items valued at more than Rs 100 were subject to customs charges.

The earlier threshold had drawn strong objections from travelers and border communities, who argued that the limit was impractically low.

The government has also retained a customs exemption for Nepali students studying in India.

Under the provision, students returning to Nepal may bring one tablet, laptop, or computer for personal use without paying customs duty.
