Massive fire at Australian oil refinery
Authorities said the blaze originated in the refinery’s motor gasoline unit, with flames reportedly reaching heights of up to 60 metres.
KATHMANDU: A major fire has broken out at the Viva Energy oil refinery near Geelong in Australia’s Victoria state, with Energy Minister Chris Bowen confirming that the incident is expected to have a direct impact on the country’s national fuel supply.
The fire erupted late Wednesday night and triggered large explosions, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompting emergency alerts.
Authorities said the blaze originated in the refinery’s motor gasoline unit, with flames reportedly reaching heights of up to 60 metres.
Emergency services confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far, and all workers at the site have been safely accounted for.
As a precaution, production of diesel and jet fuel has been reduced to low levels while firefighters continue efforts to fully contain the blaze.
The refinery is one of only two oil refineries currently operating in Australia and plays a critical role in fuel production, supplying around 50 percent of Victoria’s fuel needs and roughly 10 percent of the national supply.
Officials warned that petrol production is likely to be the most affected.
Local authorities have urged residents in nearby Geelong areas to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and switch off air conditioning systems due to smoke hazards.
