KATHMANDU: China’s nationwide college entrance examination, known as the Gaokao, began on Sunday with around 12.9 million students taking part in what is widely regarded as a defining moment in their academic and professional futures.

Often described as a make-or-break milestone for Chinese youth, the highly competitive exam is seen as a gateway to top universities and future career opportunities.

To ensure smooth and secure conduct, authorities have implemented extensive nationwide measures, including heavy police deployment around exam centers to manage traffic and maintain order.

Emergency response teams and volunteers have also been placed on standby to assist students facing unexpected issues during the examination period.

Meanwhile, the power grid authorities are using advanced technologies such as drones and infrared cameras to continuously monitor transmission lines and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply at exam venues.

Considered the world’s largest annual academic selection exam, the Gaokao is also evolving in line with China’s changing economic and social needs. Under the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), more than 100,000 new undergraduate university seats are expected to be added across major institutions.

In a notable development, Jiangxi University of Science and Technology in eastern China has become the country’s first university to offer a bachelor’s degree in Rare Earth Science and Engineering.

The program aims to harness the region’s rich mineral resources while addressing the growing demand for highly skilled professionals in the strategic rare earth industry.

For millions of students, the Gaokao remains more than just an exam—it continues to represent a decisive step toward achieving their dreams and shaping their future.
