Ghana records 952,000 cubic metres of timber production in 2025
Brown noted that Ghana’s forest cover, spanning 6.4 million hectares, continues to play a vital role in the country’s socio-economic development.
KATHMANDU: Ghana’s total production of timber and wood-based products reached 952,000 cubic metres in 2025, according to data released by the Forestry Commission.
Speaking at the launch of the “Tree for Life Reforestation Campaign 2026,” Chief Executive Hugh Brown said the combined market value of timber exports and domestic supply stood at approximately US$260 million.
Brown noted that Ghana’s forest cover, spanning 6.4 million hectares, continues to play a vital role in the country’s socio-economic development.
He added that nearly 20 percent of the population depends directly or indirectly on forest resources for livelihoods, food, and health-related needs.
Highlighting ongoing conservation challenges, Brown said the government launched targeted initiatives in 2025 to ensure sustainable forest management while maintaining the sector’s economic contribution.
He further revealed that reforestation and restoration efforts covered 23,600 hectares of degraded and deforested land across the country last year.
A recent survey showed survival rates of planted seedlings ranging between 65% and 85% in high forest zones, and 40% to 78% in northern savannah areas.
The Forestry Commission said the country is intensifying tree-planting programs to balance economic gains with long-term environmental sustainability.
