KATHMANDU: Narayan Prasad Dahal, the candidate of the ruling coalition, has been elected to the post of National Assembly Chairperson.

Dahal was elected at the meeting of the National Assembly held today on Tuesday.

He secured 39 votes, comfortably surpassing the required majority threshold.

Among the 56 MPs who participated in the voting, 39 votes were cast in favor of Dahal and 17 against.

Vice Chair Urmila Aryal, presiding over the assembly, announced the vote results of the election process, declaring that the motion to elect Dahal received 39 votes in favor.

Prior to this, 17 votes were cast in support of the proposal to elect Nepali Congress MP Yuvaraj Sharma, the candidate of Dahal’s opposing party. A total of 56 MPs participated in the voting for both proposals, with one MP remaining neutral. Currently, the assembly comprises 58 members, set to reach a total of 59.

Dahal’s nomination was put forth by Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achami of the Maoist Center, along with Devendra Dahal of the CPN (UML), Beduram Bhusal of the CPN (Unified Samajwadi), and Mohammad Khalid of the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, all extending their support.

Vice Chair Aryal extended congratulations to the newly elected Chair, Dahal, expressing wishes for a successful tenure.

The candidacy of Sharma was proposed by Nepali Congress MP Anand Prasad Dhungana, with support from Congress MP Kiran Babu Shrestha and Kishor Kumar Singh of the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Nepal.
