KATHMANDU: While Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has been advocating for party reorganization, party spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has criticized him, emphasizing the need for unity during this sensitive period. Dr. Mahat accused certain individuals of “rubbing salt on open wounds” instead of strengthening internal cohesion.

Speaking from the remains of his own house, which was set on fire during recent protests, Dr. Mahat expressed strong discontent without directly naming Thapa.

e said it was inappropriate to debate leadership changes while party President Sher Bahadur Deuba is still undergoing treatment.

Dr. Mahat stressed that the current situation should be seen as an opportunity to address weaknesses and reinforce internal unity. “Now is the time for all of us to come together, fix shortcomings, and strengthen party unity. But the wrong tendency of aggravating wounds at this moment is concerning,” he said.

Indirectly targeting General Secretary Thapa, Dr. Mahat added, “Those raising questions now, pushing for leadership change, were the closest to the president until four days before the 23rd. If you look at their words and actions, they were the ones most closely involved.”

He further criticized the rush to discuss leadership change while President Deuba faces what he called “a brutal attack,” questioning, “Can we not even wait for the treatment to finish when the guardian is under such a strike? Will the sky fall?”

Dr. Mahat clarified that serious discussions and evaluations would take place within the party.

While corrective measures will be taken based on events, he warned that starting debates outside the official decisions of the party’s working committee would not strengthen the party.
