KATHMANDU: Madhesh Province Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav has resigned from his post even before the confidence vote could take place.

Yadav announced his resignation directly from the rostrum during the provincial assembly meeting called for the confidence vote

As he began his address, members of the CPN-UML, Federal Socialist Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and several other parties walked out of the chamber. Realizing that he would not secure the required majority, Yadav chose to step down immediately.

Earlier, Chief Minister Yadav had been appointed on Kartik 23 by the then-Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari under Article 168(3) of the Constitution, citing his position as leader of the largest party.

However, 74 provincial assembly members from seven parties had filed a petition at the Supreme Court, claiming the appointment was unconstitutional.

Responding to the petition, the Supreme Court on Mangsir 15 issued a mandamus order requiring Yadav to seek a vote of confidence within 24 hours. Following the order, the provincial assembly meeting was scheduled for today.

With Yadav’s failure to secure the vote, the path is now open for a new government to be formed under Article 168(2) of the Constitution, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directive.
