KATHMANDU: The International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations is being observed across the world, including in Nepal, today.

The Day aims to promote mutual understanding, respect and cooperation among civilizations and cultures at a time of growing global conflicts, inequality, mistrust and development challenges.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on June 7, 2024, declaring June 10 as the annual International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

The resolution, proposed by China, received support from more than 80 countries.

According to the United Nations, dialogue among civilizations helps eliminate discrimination, prejudice and misconceptions while fostering trust, understanding and friendly relations among nations, cultures and communities.

The UN has recognized dialogue as an effective means to advance global peace, shared development, human welfare and prosperity.

On the occasion, the international community has been encouraged to uphold civilizational diversity as a shared heritage of humanity and strengthen tolerance, harmony and intercultural dialogue.

The United Nations has expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation among diverse civilizations and cultures would contribute to building a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world.

For Nepal, the observance reflects the country’s multicultural and multilingual character, where diverse communities have long coexisted.

This year marks the second global observance of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.
