KATHMANDU: Kathmandu District Administration has imposed a prohibitory order in and around Tribhuvan International Airport, citing heightened security concerns.

The move comes after various political parties and groups planned airport-centred protests on Feb 13.

The order, effective from Thursday for one month, prohibits gatherings of more than five people within the airport premises.

Activities such as hunger strikes, sit-ins, rallies, demonstrations, or any form of public assembly are strictly banned.

According to the order issued by Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Poudel, all areas from the airport’s main entrance (Golden Gate) to the domestic and international terminal buildings, parking zones, and internal roads have been declared restricted.

“The airport is a highly sensitive zone, and crowds or demonstrations could disrupt air services and pose risks of vandalism or arson,” the administration stated in a press release.

The administration emphasized its commitment to citizens’ constitutional rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. It clarified that peaceful protests outside the restricted zone will not be hindered.

However, organizers of any protests are warned that they will be held accountable for any damage to government, public, or private property during their activities

Security around the airport has been further tightened ahead of the planned Feb 13 demonstration.
