High alert in Jhapa–5 as 286 polling centers marked ‘highly sensitive’

KATHMANDU: With the upcoming House of Representatives elections approaching, authorities in Jhapa have classified 95 polling stations and 286 polling centers as “highly sensitive.”

Among them, Constituency Jhapa–5 alone accounts for 20 polling stations and 70 polling centers placed under the high-risk category.

According to the local administration, the highly sensitive list also includes:

  • Jhapa–1: 16 polling stations (54 polling centers)

  • Jhapa–2: 16 polling stations (55 polling centers)

  • Jhapa–3: 19 polling stations (40 polling centers)

  • Jhapa–4: 25 polling stations (67 polling centers)

Security has been tightened in Jhapa–5, which officials describe as the “epicenter” of the election, amid expectations of a high-profile contest between CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli and Rastriya Swatantra Party senior leader Balen Shah.

Chief District Officer Shivram Gelal acknowledged that several polling centers have been classified differently compared to the previous election.

Across the district, out of a total of 285 polling stations and 815 polling centers, 147 centers have been categorized as “sensitive,” while 43 polling stations have been placed in the “normal” category, the administration said.
