KATHMANDU: Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harka Raj Rai has urged the government to immediately arrange proper rehabilitation for squatters who were displaced after demolition drives carried out by authorities.

Speaking in Wednesday’s House of Representatives meeting, Rai said that many displaced squatters are currently facing severe hardship in holding centers, including shortages of food and drinking water. He warned that those affected by what he described as “bulldozer operations” are struggling to survive without necessities.

Rai stressed that the government should prioritise returning displaced families to their original settlements and develop a planned urban resettlement strategy in those locations, as suggested by the squatters themselves.

He also called on the government to ensure relief assistance and immediate rehabilitation measures without further delay. In addition, Rai suggested that funds allocated for urban management and city planning should instead be redirected toward squatter resettlement programs.

During the same session, Rai also stated that his party’s protest inside parliament would continue until Prime Minister Balen Shah’s remarks on border issues are removed from the parliamentary record.
