KATHMANDU: Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harka Sampang has remarked that lawmakers in House of Representatives now seem to need protests just to get speaking time, criticizing what he called a declining parliamentary culture.

Speaking during Monday’s parliamentary session, Sampang took a sharp dig at the political environment, saying the country’s history of agitation, conflict, and violence appears to have left its “hangover” inside the legislature itself.

“Now even to speak in this House, we have to launch protests. We have been protesting just to come near the Prime Minister,” he said, adding that Nepal has become a country shaped by continuous movements, clashes, and instability, which he believes is reflected in current parliamentary behavior.

He further stated that lawmakers may have “grown up in an environment shaped by conflict and unrest,” suggesting that this background is influencing how the House operates today.

Sampang stressed that Parliament must function strictly through established procedures and rules. He also accused the Prime Minister of making a serious mistake regarding remarks on border issues and demanded that the House issue a ruling to formally summon and address the matter.

Raising concerns over national border security, he urged that the issue be examined seriously and even suggested that the Nepal Army should be deployed to investigate and assess the situation on the ground.

His comments added further tension to ongoing debates in Parliament, where opposition and ruling party members have repeatedly clashed over procedural and national security issues.
