KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya has said that the government is taking firm steps to curb misconduct among legal professionals in Nepal.

Speaking at a preliminary discussion on the Nepal Bar Council (Second Amendment) Bill, 2081 held on Monday by the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee at Singha Durbar, Minister Chaurasiya stated that the proposed bill includes provisions to penalize lawyers for unethical practices.

He emphasized that if any lawyer is found colluding with the opposing party or leaking confidential information, they will face disciplinary action, including the suspension of their license.

“The bill has been designed to control misconduct by legal professionals,” Chaurasiya said. “If a lawyer engages in collusion with the opposing side or discloses confidential matters, they will be subject to strict disciplinary action, including suspension of their license.”

The minister further stated that the bill also addresses inappropriate behavior toward legal professionals, introducing measures to ensure mutual respect and accountability within the legal community.

In a move towards greater transparency, the bill proposes that all payments for legal services be made through financial institutions. “To enhance transparency, we have mandated that legal service fees must be processed through banking channels,” Chaurasiya added.

He also noted that the current criteria for appointing Senior Advocates would remain unchanged in the new bill, maintaining continuity in the existing legal framework.

The amendment aims to enhance discipline, ensure professional integrity, and improve transparency in the legal profession across Nepal.
