Govt committed to increasing investment in education, says Minister Pokharel
For the next fiscal year, the government has allocated Rs 10.45 billion for school infrastructure development, according to the minister.
KATHMANDU: Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to steadily increasing investment in the education sector, stating that both education and health remain key priorities in upcoming fiscal planning.
Speaking during Thursday’s House of Representatives session while responding to lawmakers’ concerns over his ministry’s budget allocation, Minister Pokharel said the government has already made necessary provisions in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget to strengthen the education system, including a focus on digital learning and infrastructure development.
He highlighted that investment will begin from the school level, with initiatives such as the expansion of smart boards in classrooms, programs aimed at improving foundational learning outcomes, and broader capacity-building efforts in the education sector.
For the next fiscal year, the government has allocated Rs 10.45 billion for school infrastructure development, according to the minister.
He also addressed concerns raised by some lawmakers regarding lower capital expenditure, arguing that such spending is naturally limited in certain ministries and should not be viewed in isolation.
Pokharel further stated that not all educational reforms require heavy capital investment, emphasizing that policy-driven and program-based interventions are equally important in improving learning outcomes and strengthening the system overall.
