KATHMANDU: Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun has said that the current government’s primary objective is to advance the information technology sector with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation.

Responding to lawmakers’ questions on his ministry’s budget allocation during Thursday’s House of Representatives meeting, Minister Pun emphasized that the government is prioritizing the practical use of AI and IT to drive national development.

He noted that Prime Minister Balen Shah has also placed special emphasis on AI and IT reform, including consolidating responsibilities related to information technology under his direct oversight.

According to Minister Pun, the government’s approach is not limited to research and academic publication but aims to ensure that innovation and inventions are effectively utilized by industries.

“AI and IT development is the core focus of this government. Any innovation or research should not remain only in papers; it must be used by industries for real-world benefit,” he said in parliament.

He further added that many industrial stakeholders are still unaware of how technological innovation can be integrated into production and economic growth, stressing the need for stronger collaboration between researchers, innovators, and industry.

The minister reiterated that the government is committed to promoting innovation, ensuring practical application of research outputs, and strengthening Nepal’s digital and industrial transformation.
