KATHMANDU: A gang has been found actively involved in robbing and cheating elderly people in Morang district by using fake gold-like yellow metal as bait, according to police.

Authorities say the group specifically targets senior citizens and vulnerable individuals in crowded areas, public buses, fairs, hospitals, and isolated locations, operating in a coordinated and planned manner.

In the latest incident, a 78-year-old woman, Savitradevi Ghimire of Belbari Municipality–1, was victimized while returning home on a bus from her daughter’s residence in Pathari Shanishchare on April 15.

Two unidentified men approached her during the journey, initially striking up a conversation by asking where a “gold shop” was located.

They then showed her a yellow metal piece claiming it was “gold brought from the UK,” convincing her it was genuine.

After gaining her trust, they led her toward a secluded area along the highway and snatched her 1 tola 6 ana gold chain before fleeing.

Following the incident, the Belbari Area Police Office launched an investigation.

Based on CCTV footage and intelligence, police arrested 61-year-old Dhakla Bahadur Theeng of Kankai Municipality–9, Jhapa.

Morang Police Chief Kabit Katwal said Thing is a repeat offender previously linked to similar fraud cases.

Police investigation indicates the crime is part of an organized gang operating across eastern Nepal, targeting elderly and simple-minded individuals in Morang, Jhapa, and Sunsari.

The group’s method involves showing fake gold to lure victims, building trust, and quickly snatching real jewelry when an opportunity arises.

Elderly people traveling alone are their primary targets.

Earlier, another similar incident was reported in Belbari on March 23, when a 62-year-old woman, Dhanimaya Tamang of Belbari–4, had her gold earring stolen after being deceived with fake gold.

Preliminary investigation suggests Theeng’s involvement in that case as well.

Police are currently searching for another absconding suspect and have urged the public to remain alert, avoid accepting any gold or money-related offers from strangers, and immediately report suspicious activity to authorities.
