KATHMANDU: In the ongoing second special convention of the Nepali Congress, General Secretary Gagan Thapa has officially filed his candidacy for the party president.

According to sources from the Election Committee, Thapa is the only candidate to have registered for the presidential post within the stipulated deadline.

The committee also confirmed that nominations for all other leadership positions have been completed.

Before filing his candidacy, efforts were made within the party to reach a consensus on leadership, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

On Wednesday morning, Thapa and fellow General Secretary Bishwprakash Sharma held crucial talks with party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to reach an agreement, but the discussions concluded without a resolution.

Following the nomination process, Thapa and Sharma are consulting legal experts to carefully consider the political and legal implications of the developments.

They are seeking clarity on the nomination procedures and party statutes.

Election Committee coordinator Sitaram KC stated that the nomination period has now ended. “We have successfully completed the candidate registration process,” KC said.

The preliminary list of registered candidates will be published today at 1 PM.
