Former Chief Election Commissioner criticizes political parties for ignoring law
He noted that although the law requires central party officials to submit their asset declarations to the party office within 60 days of election, no party has complied.
KATHMANDU: Former Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya has criticized political parties for failing to implement the Political Parties Act.
Speaking at a Wednesday event in Kathmandu on the “10-Year Review of Constitution Implementation: Achievements, Challenges, and Suggestions,” Thapaliya said parties have been operating secretly and against the law.
He noted that although the law requires central party officials to submit their asset declarations to the party office within 60 days of election, no party has complied.
He added that the Election Commission cannot enter party offices, making law enforcement and monitoring difficult.
Thapaliya warned that such violations by political parties have serious impacts on the country’s development, good governance, and institutional progress.
He emphasized that the responsibility for the nation’s growth and prosperity lies with political parties and that a strong, institutionalized party system is essential for national progress.
