KATHMANDU: Amid the ongoing leadership dispute within the Nepali Congress, the Election Commission (EC) has clarified that it will base its decision solely on legal provisions and established procedures.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that the Commission will follow its own methods, the Constitution, and existing laws when determining the party’s official status. “The Election Commission has its own traditions and procedures. We will make decisions strictly within the framework of the Constitution, Acts, and regulations, without succumbing to any pressure or influence,” he emphasized during discussions with party leaders who approached the EC to assert their claims.

The dispute erupted after Gagan Thapa and Bishwoprakash Sharma formed a new central committee through a special convention, leading to a clear split within the party.

Both factions have filed claims with the Commission asserting their legitimacy.

Commissioner Bhandari reiterated that the EC will strictly follow legal procedures and precedents and will proceed to organize elections as necessary.

He urged confidence in the impartiality and fairness of the Commission’s decision, assuring that the resolution will remain within the boundaries of the Political Parties Act and the Constitution.
