Displaced riverbank settlers intensify protest, demand safe housing (photos)

KATHMANDU: Protests by displaced families from unauthorized settlements along riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley have continued after the government carried out demolition drives on April 25, 26, May 2 and 3, displacing hundreds of households.

On Friday, various left-wing groups and squatter rights activists staged a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu, demanding immediate arrangements for safe and dignified housing for the affected families.

Protesters said their agitation will continue until the government ensures proper rehabilitation and compensation.

Following the eviction, displaced families have been temporarily housed in government-managed holding centers at different locations.

However, tensions have escalated after the Bagmati Civilisation Integrated Development Committee recently issued a notice instructing authorities to vacate these holding centers by June 26.

Although the deadline has now been extended to July 3, uncertainty over relocation has further intensified the protests.

The demonstrators are demanding guaranteed alternative housing, fair compensation for demolished homes and shelters, and a dignified resettlement plan from the government.

They argue that temporary arrangements are insufficient and that long-term rehabilitation must be prioritized.

Authorities say they are working on managing the displaced population, but protesters continue to press for a concrete and permanent solution.
