KATHMANDU: As the monsoon season approaches, a comprehensive disaster response drill has been conducted in Sankhuwasabha to prepare for potential natural disasters such as floods and landslides.
The simulation took place today at Tudikhel, Khandbari, in coordination with the District Disaster Management Committee.
The Nepali Army’s Indra Dal Battalion, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Red Cross, and fire brigade teams actively participated in the exercise.
The drill focused on rescue operations in the aftermath of a landslide, including first aid for the injured, management of displaced people, and the distribution of relief materials.
Chief District Officer Divya Raj Pokharel stated, “This year, heavy rainfall is forecasted across the country, increasing the risk of floods and landslides in hilly regions. In view of this, a preparedness drill was carried out to ensure rapid rescue and relief operations.”
The exercise is expected to enhance coordination, communication, and swift response capabilities among security forces and concerned agencies.
However, officials have expressed concern that disaster management is still not prioritized by all three levels of government.
Due to a lack of adequate resources at the local level, rescue efforts during actual disasters could face serious challenges.
