KATHMANDU: Harka Sampang, mayor of Dharan, has resigned from his post to contest the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 (March 5).

On Sunday evening, Sampang submitted his resignation to Deputy Mayor Aindra Bikram Begha, who has now assumed the responsibilities of acting mayor of Dharan.

Elected as an independent candidate in the 2079 local elections, Sampang did not complete his full term as mayor.

He has announced his candidacy from Sunsari-1 under his newly registered political party, the Shram Sanskriti Party, which has “Mato (Soil)” as its election symbol. Sampang has also declared his ambition to become the Prime Minister.

Following Sampang’s resignation, Surya Bahadur Bhattarai (Manoj), the chairperson of Ward No. 17, also stepped down from his post.

Bhattarai submitted his resignation to acting mayor Begha and has announced his candidacy from Sunsari-1 under the Nepali Communist Party, whose election symbol is the “Tara (Star).”

Bhattarai, a vocal critic of Sampang’s mayoral tenure, had previously challenged him to a direct electoral contest and resigned during an executive meeting.
