KATHMANDU: The internal dispute over leadership in the Nepali Congress has formally reached the Election Commission.

Following the “second special convention,” in which the Gagan–Bishwa faction announced a new committee under Gagan Thapa’s leadership, the party’s establishment wing led by Sher Bahadur Deuba staged a show of strength at the Commission on Friday morning to assert its legitimacy.

A large delegation of Deuba supporters, from top leaders to party workers, gathered at the Commission’s Kantipath office.

The Gagan Thapa-led faction had submitted a formal request for recognition just the day before, prompting the Deuba camp to respond and assert that the Deuba-led Congress remains the party’s lawful body.

Among the leaders present were Vice-Chairman Purna Bahadur Khadka, Ramesh Lekhak, Bimalendra Nidhi, Ramesh Rijal, Dr. Minendra Rijal, NP Saud, Shyam Ghimire, Dhanraj Gurung, Kalyan Gurung, and Jeet Jung Basnet.

The team also included central committee officials, district chairpersons, and representatives from affiliated organizations, all preparing to discuss the matter with Election Commission officials.

Speaking to reporters, leader Kalyan Gurung emphasized their faction’s claim, saying, “We have gathered here with central leaders and representatives from various levels. The Deuba-led Congress is the official Nepali Congress. We are here to clarify this issue and hold discussions with the Commission officials.”
