Continuous rain triggers landslides, damages houses & infrastructure in Baitadi

KATHMANDU: Continuous rainfall over the past several days has caused widespread damage to houses and physical infrastructure across different parts of Baitadi district.

According to District Police Office spokesperson Inspector Balram Pandey, a landslide in Patan Municipality–4 Bhattagaun demolished the two-story shop of Dharmanand Bhatt, resulting in the loss of food items and groceries worth over Rs 100,000.

Similarly, in Purchaudi Municipality–3 Khali, two houses belonging to Karna Bahadur Dhami have started collapsing after the ground beneath them sank and walls cracked. His family of six, along with their livestock, have been relocated to a safer place.

In Melouli Municipality–3 Kuchagaad, the houses of Ramsingh Bhat and Karandatta Bag are at high risk due to landslides. A goat tied near Ramsingh’s house was buried, though no human casualties have been reported.

In Surnaya Rural Municipality–3 Budhibas, the houses of Veer Singh Bista and Man Singh Bista have been left vulnerable after their courtyards began to sink. Likewise, in Dogadakedar–3 Idakot, the families of Veerbhan Singh Bhat and Narayan Singh Bhat have taken shelter at relatives’ homes after their houses faced severe risk.

Meanwhile, the Gothalapani–Jhula Ghat road, which was blocked by a landslide in Dasharathchand–10 Aadharpind, has reopened after clearance. However, the Dehimado–Giregada road remains obstructed since August 29 due to a landslide near Sugar Khali.

The heavy rainfall also damaged the house of Ganesh Bahadur Chand in Patan–6 Odali and caused land subsidence around the two-story home of Karbir Bhatt in Purchaudi–4 Bidgaira. His six-member family has been shifted to safety. Additionally, the building of Laxmipur Basic School has been left in a vulnerable condition.

Chief District Officer Punya Bikram Paudel said that night-time vehicle movement has been restricted due to heightened risks, adding that all emergency response mechanisms in the district are on standby for immediate rescue operations if required.
