KATHMANDU: Bayern Munich claimed the German Super Cup title with a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart, thanks to goals from new signing Luis Diaz and England captain Harry Kane.
Díaz, making his debut for Bayern, showcased an impressive performance. Signed from Liverpool for £65.5 million on a four-year deal, the Colombian forward headed in Serge Gnabry’s cross in the 77th minute to give Bayern a 2-0 lead.
Following the goal, Diaz paid tribute to his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota by mimicking Jota’s signature goal celebration.
Jota and his brother Andre Silva tragically passed away in a car accident last July.
Earlier, Kane had opened the scoring in the 18th minute by capitalizing on Stuttgart’s defensive lapse.
In stoppage time, Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling pulled one back, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Bayern from securing the trophy.
This marks Bayern Munich’s 11th German Super Cup triumph, while Kane secured his second German trophy.
Bayern will now begin their Bundesliga title defense against RB Leipzig on Aug 22.
