KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has strongly objected to Prime Minister Balen Shah’s recent social media post, saying it raises serious concerns about the dignity and responsibility of the Prime Minister’s office.

His reaction comes after PM Shah posted a satirical status on Facebook stating, “I also want to be an ambassador, give me the PM’s number,” which Basnet described as inappropriate for someone holding such a high public position.

Basnet questioned whether such remarks are suitable from a sitting Prime Minister, emphasizing that the office demands restraint and institutional dignity.

He also referred to an incident involving a senior civil servant from Madhesh who was allegedly mistreated by police over an SMS of similar wording. Basnet argued that instead of addressing such serious issues responsibly, the Prime Minister chose to respond in a sarcastic manner.

“In a time when a senior official from Madhesh is facing police harassment over a similar message, it is inappropriate and inhumane for someone who claims to represent Madhesh to make such jokes,” Basnet said in his statement.

Basnet further claimed that the Prime Minister’s recent behavior reflects personal frustration and ego rather than mature leadership. He stressed that leaders in state power are expected to demonstrate calmness, responsibility, and institutional respect.

While stating that he does not intend to engage in personal attacks, Basnet added that the Prime Minister may be showing signs of being emotionally overwhelmed, suggesting that he might even need psychological counseling based on his recent conduct.
