KATHMANDU: FC Barcelona stunningly sealed the La Liga title after defeating arch-rivals Real Madrid CF 2-0 in a decisive El Clasico clash at Camp Nou on Sunday.
Early goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres guided Barcelona to victory, as the Catalan giants wrapped up the league crown in front of their home supporters.
Barcelona took control from the opening stages and raced into a two-goal lead within 18 minutes. The hosts never looked in danger of surrendering their advantage, handing Madrid a humiliating defeat in one of the most significant Clasicos in recent history.
It marked the first time Real Madrid had watched Barcelona secure the La Liga title by defeating them directly in a derby encounter.
Madrid were already weakened before kickoff, with Kylian Mbappé unavailable, while Federico Valverde suffered a head injury in training following a collision with Aurélien Tchouaméni. Despite disciplinary proceedings reportedly being opened against him by the club, Tchouaméni still started the match.
Barcelona broke the deadlock in the ninth minute after Antonio Rüdiger fouled Torres near the edge of the penalty area. Rashford stepped up and curled a superb free-kick beyond Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-0.
The lead was doubled in the 18th minute when Fermín López delivered a long pass that Dani Olmo brilliantly controlled. Olmo then set up Torres, who calmly finished past Courtois.
Real Madrid struggled to respond despite several opportunities. Gonzalo García missed a clear one-on-one chance, while Eric García produced a crucial defensive intervention late in the first half. Barcelona also came close to adding a third through Rashford and Olmo before the break.
Tempers flared early in the second half following a clash between Olmo and Raúl Asencio, while Courtois denied Torres again to keep Madrid alive.
Jude Bellingham thought he had pulled one back after finishing a move created by Brahim Díaz, but the goal was ruled out for offside, effectively ending Madrid’s hopes of a comeback.
Barcelona’s players erupted in celebration at the final whistle as they secured another historic La Liga triumph.
The victory carried emotional significance for Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, whose father reportedly passed away earlier on Sunday. Despite the personal tragedy, Flick remained with the team in the dugout throughout the match.
This was only the second time in El Clasico history that the La Liga title had been decided directly in a match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. The first occasion came in 1932.
For the first time, however, the title-deciding Clasico ended in Barcelona’s favor.
With the triumph, Flick also became only the fourth Barcelona manager to win La Liga within his first two seasons at the club, joining Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde.
Following 264 competitive El Clasico matches, both Barcelona and Real Madrid are now level on 106 wins each, with 52 matches ending in draws.
