5 climbers die in Everest & Makalu expeditions
Among the deceased are three Nepali nationals and two foreign climbers.
KATHMANDU: Five climbers and guides have died during the ongoing spring climbing season in Nepal, the Nepal Tourism Board confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the board, the fatalities occurred between May 3 and the present during expeditions on Mount Everest and Makalu.
Among the deceased are three Nepali nationals and two foreign climbers.
On the Everest region, those who lost their lives include Lakpa Dendi Sherpa of Solukhumbu, Bijay Ghimire, and Phur Geljen Sherpa.
Lakpa Dendi Sherpa was associated with Seven Summit Treks, Ghimire with Tag Nepal, and Phur Geljen Sherpa with Kaytu Expeditions.
In separate incidents, Czech climber David Rubinek and American citizen Johaneson Shelley also died while attempting high-altitude climbs.
The Department of Tourism stated that Rubinek was part of an expedition organized by IAM Trekking Company on Makalu II, while Shelley, who was climbing under Seven Summit Treks, also died during an attempt in the Makalu region.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the spring climbing season progresses, which is traditionally one of the busiest—and most dangerous—periods for Himalayan expeditions.
